The Sitalsasthi Carnival

For many years the popular Hindu holiday Sitalsasthi has been celebrated with a Carnival. It marks the union of Parvati and Shiva. All though most historians are not sure about the actual dates of its origin, there are records indicating that Sitalsasthi has been rejoiced on the same date for the past 300 years. Held in Sambalpur it offers an array of unique entertainment such as dance, music, floats, Hindi phone sex and parades; attracting all walks of life who partake in the activities especially with artists. It takes place annually towards the end of summer or may also be referred to as the sixth day of bright fortnight in the month of Jyestha. The main accomplishment of this festival is to call the rain Gods so they can help reprieve from the scorching Sun’s heat. Sitalsasthi is said to be one of the most beautiful cultural Hindu festivals celebrated in India.
